Hi All!! I heard that you might be getting your acceptances today, how exciting, congrats to anyone who got accepted to Barnard and most of all, decide to come ! I remember the day I got my acceptance letter, I was soo happy. I know that Barnard was the right place for me and it was definitely my top choice out of the 14 schools I applied to.
Before everything, let me introduce who I am. My name is Ka Yuk or Kay and I am a freshmen here at Barnard. I am from Brooklyn, NYC and I am not a commuter. I dorm in the quad now and will be dorming in a suite next year. I currently live in Brooks with 3 additional people. 2 of which are from my high school and one of which I met during my HEOP program in the summer. We live together and get so along that everything is going so great we decided to live together next year again. I am so excited.
I am premed and know that I will be majoring in biology. I am about 90% sure in majoring biology, but the 10% may be to chemistry because I majored in chemistry in high school. So if you are premed or any science majors, feel free to leave a comment and I'll try to answer your questions!! I'm also in the Student Health Advisory Committee of Barnard's student government. We basically work with barnard health services to promote health and awareness on campus.
Barnard is such a great place to be in. The atmosphere, professors, the campus and everything about Barnard is what attracts me to be here right now. You definitely should come to the campus to visit before making your decision. It is a very small campus, very tight knit. I love the fact that Barnard is such a small community because I came from such a large high school. Although Barnard is super teeny, we have so much cool events for the student body here. For example, the day before finals, we had midnight breakfast where the school host breakfast during the midnight. It was so fun eating and chatting with your friends in your pjs.
I am also in the badminton club last semester and it was a pretty intensive club. I didn't find it right for me so I quitted after a couple of days after the 2nd semester. Right now, I am taking Yoga classes and I totally love it. I think I will do yoga for the rest of my life and is looking forward to taking yoga classes next year too!
Right now I am taking biology, women and culture seminar, world dance history and calculus. I am very happy with my 2nd semester now than my 1st semester. Its because it is a little hard transitioning in from high school, but don't worry about it!! You all can do it !
Besides the other activities I do, I am an event coordinator for Columbia University's Operation Smile. We fundraise money through events to sponsor surgeries for children with cleft lip. If you are at all interested, please join next year !! I also do babysitting once in a while and it is so fun. Great way to make some extra cash too!!
I think I will stop around here since I have 2 essays to draft up. Next week, I think I will post some pictures of the campus and the dining hall perhaps.
Good Luck everyone and feel free to ask any questions (especially if you are from nyc :D ]

Hey, quick question. I'm a recent admit and I saw you do yoga. Are there classes offered at Barnard? Columbia maybe? I love yoga and was hoping there'd be some on campus for me to do! If so, is it expensive? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi Quinn,
ReplyDeleteGreat that you commented on my post. First of all, congratulations and welcome you to the Barnard community. Yes, I am taking yoga classes. All students at Barnard is required to do 2 gym classes, one during their freshmen year and one during their junior year. The gym placement is done in a lottery system. I always loved yoga so I really want to do yoga during my freshman year. I am taking it at Barnard and the instructor is very good at teaching yoga. Next year, since I wouldn't be taking gym, I will take paid yoga classes at Barnard. It will be held about 3 times a week at nights and you pay about 80 dollars for the whole semester. You can go all 3 times a week or none at all, up to you. If you don't want to do that, I'm pretty sure that there will be plenty of choices near this area that will offer yoga classes.
Ah ok, awesome. And thank you! I'm so excited to be a part of Barnard! And who'd have thought one could get college credit for yoga? Someone enlightened, for sure. Thanks for your reply!
