An Introduction

Hello!

So before I dive into my daily life here at Barnard, I thought I would take one entry to introduce myself.

I am currently a Junior at Barnard College. Originally I’m from Ann Arbor, Michigan (Go Blue!). I am an enthusiastic History major with a concentration in Jewish History. I am also Pre-med.

I have been working for the Barnard Office of Admissions for three years now as a BSAR (Barnard Student Admissions Representative), and my favorite part of being a BSAR is giving tours to prospective students.

I also am a member of Peer Health Exchange. PHE is a nationwide organization which trains college students to teach a comprehensive health curriculum to 9th graders whose schools do not provide such a course. We teach workshops on everything from alcohol and drug abuse, to facts about contraception, and healthy dating relationships. Specifically, I have been trained to teach a 45 minute class on Abusive Relationships. On Fridays I go to different New York Public Schools with my fellow classmates and Peer Health Educators (PHEs) and teach our course.

I conduct research in the Neurological Intensive Care Unit at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital for the past two years. Mostly, I call patients who were hospitalized for Subarrachoid Hemorrages (SAH) and have been released from the NICU. I ask them a whole range of questions, including a series of Neuropsychological Batteries, to help assess the extent of their recovery. In addition to doing research during the year, I worked in the NICU last summer, have gone on rounds and even got to see a neurosurgery!

Every ten years Barnard has to produce a self-evaluation for the Middle-States Committee in order to receive reaccreditation. I serve as a student representative on one of the working groups for Barnard’s Reaccreditation process. My role is to offer a student perspective to my working group, which is evaluating the Barnard Administration’s effectiveness in fulfilling the Barnard’s mission.

I love being a student at Barnard! I have friends that feel more like family, spectacular classes, and I can call New York City my home (which includes being able to give you directions to a great cupcake store practically anywhere in Manhattan:).

I look forward to sharing my experiences here and trying to capture what it is like to be a Barnard student and why I love it. But, more importantly, I’m curious to hear what questions you have about Barnard and being a student here. Please don’t hesitate to ask!!
