Tuesdays are terrific at Barnard. Tuesday evenings in particular. I would eat a late dinner in Hewitt, watching the sunset glow up 116th street from Riverside Drive. Then came the skip and hop up three flights of stairs to Sulzberger Parlor, one of the loveliest spaces on campus. It was in that room where I walked through flower markets in China and attended marriages between popsicle sticks and puppies. Sometimes I'd sit beside friends, other nights it was just me and a napkin-full of cookies, or a glass of something fragrant like hyacinth and pepper.
The English Department hosts readings by professors, students, and scholars from around the world. The first story I refer to above is from a piece written and read by Emily Kan, a senior writing student (Class of 2009). The second refers to a reading by Darcy Steinke, a professor and writer who read from her brilliant and colorful memoir, Easter Everywhere.
I took the photograph during my first summer in the city. Although lacking in color, this is the glow that I am referring to. You can catch it from the south dinner room of Hewitt Hall.
I'll save Wednesdays for the next entry.
